Hack The Box: Forest

Beautiful landscape of bamboo grove in the forest at arashiyama kyoto Free Photo

To start, we unzip the zip file and see what we’ve got.

Look like a lovely image of a forest. The description reads “Explore the forest” so I start zooming in to find any hidden messages.

After noticing that there is some black text around the trees to the left, I try and ‘Invert’ the colours of the image. This doesn’t work….

I then try and online image editor and play around with the filters:

After applying one more filter to the image above, I can then read the password to extract the hidden files. We can use Steghide to extract the data now we have the password (IsJuS1Af0r******)

Once we have done this, we get a cipher. Using a trusty site we can decrypt the message and get the flag: https://www.dcode.fr/caesar-cipher
